Charles W. Hamann, “Bucky”  (Age 97)

It is with great sadness that we must report the death, on July 18, 2017, of our father, Charles W. Hamann. Better known to most as Bucky, he reached the age of 97. He is survived by his beloved wife, Margaret W. Cochel, and his four children, Terry W. Hamann (Jean Shannon), Charles B. Hamann, Kathy L. Watson (George), and Mary Jo Ringler. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, as well as many cherished nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Charles E. and Sara C. Hamann, and his older brother, Robert, who passed in 1992 at the age of 79, and his first wife, Edna Mae Hamann who passed in 2003 at the age of 79.

Bucky was born on January 27, 1920, and grew up on T Street in Anacostia, Washington DC. Bucky had great memories of playing sports on the Anacostia Flats, experiences with the WWI Bonus Marchers encampment in 1932, and attending the Senators baseball games at the old Griffith Stadium. Bucky attended Eastern High School, prior to the construction of Anacostia High.

After graduation, Bucky went to work at the Office of the Quartermaster General and then at the Office Chief of Transportation before being inducted into the military at Fort Belvoir, Va. Bucky served in WWII with the US Army 30th Engineer Topographic Battalion, Company B, as a topographic draftsman, where he spent the remaining time of his military life. After his discharge, he was employed by what was then known as the Army Map Service located in Brookmont, Md. where he worked for the majority of his career.

Bucky and Edna Mae moved to the Twinbrook neighborhood in Rockville, Md, where they raised their family. Bucky commuted to the Map Service in a carpool with coworkers who had also moved to Rockville. He and “The Boys” became lifelong friends, as they had served together and now worked together.

Upon returning from work and “getting a bite to eat”, Bucky would head over to McIntire Hardware to work several more hours during the weekdays. Bucky enjoyed meeting and helping customers who would come to McIntires to find out what part they needed and how to repair or finish their project. And not being one to sit around in front of the TV, Bucky also took on home improvement projects around the house. Finishing the basement, building retaining walls, pouring a concrete patio and steps, brick and block work, constructing an addition, and adding a bathroom, to name a few of his projects. He had tremendous focus and drive, while remaining humble. He had an eye for detail, and produced craftsman quality results.

Bucky’s most important projects were his kids. He was very patient, kind and generous with his children. He wasn’t too hard on us when we messed up, although his expectations were very high. He led by example, and had a very high moral compass. He found time for each of his kids, and indulged us in our interests, hobbies, music and sports. He could throw a terrifying knuckle-ball. He provided his family with a good life in Rockville.

Bucky played golf, and in retirement, he spent a lot of time walking the links. His other enjoyment were his dogs. Pepe, Peter, Sheeba, Niki, and Beauregard were the family pets, and they loved Bucky.

Bucky and Margaret got married and he moved to Leesburg, Florida. They had a joyful marriage filled with trips and cruises and togetherness. They had a nice house and Bucky kept busy doing projects and yard work.  He did his best to rake those ever falling Magnolia leaves every day. They lived in their house until three years ago.

A couple of falls and health issues prompted the move to Lakeport Square, where they had an Independent Living apartment within a wonderful community. They enjoyed their new lifestyle until medical issues forced Margaret into the skilled nursing facility. Bucky, while now needing a walker, walked over to visit Margaret every day as he hoped and prayed that she would be able to return to the apartment.

Health issues finally prompted Bucky into a wheelchair and a move to Assisted Living last year. He and Margaret were in the same facility and were once again able to spend most of their time together, where he could look after her and make sure that she was OK. Bucky had Coronary Heart Disease and took a turn for the worse in early July. All of his kids were able to have time with him before his passing. He had a blessed life and died at peace, in his sleep.

Jacinto A. Acedo (Age 61)

On Wednesday, July 26, 2017 Jacinto A. Acedo of Silver Spring, MD passed away. Beloved husband of Susan Acedo; Loving father of Anna, Rommel, Nanette, Vinson De Guzman (son in law), and Michael Jack. He was born and raised in the Philippines then later migrated to the US for better opportunity; worked as a banker at Riggs Bank, manager at Popeyes, and lastly; Automotive technician/attendant services at Prince George County Public Schools. He was a loving,  quite, friendly, and responsible person.

Relatives and friends may attend the viewing at Collins Funeral Home located at 500 University Boulevard West Silver Spring, MD (Valet Parking), Tuesday, August 1, 2017 from 7 to 9 pm . Interment private.

Yuk Lan Cheng (Age 91)

On Saturday, July 22, 2017, of Silver Spring, MD originally from NanJing, China.  Sister of Shi-Fu Cheng, Ming-Yuk Cheng and Shi-Lan Cheng.  Also survived by many nephews, nieces, grandnephews and grandnieces.

JOAN ELIZABETH RIND (Age 69)

On Saturday, July 22, 2017, of Silver Spring, MD. Beloved wife of Richand Rind; sister of Kathy Jones and the late Lawrence Mack; aunt of Carrie and Alex Mack. Margaret “Maggi” Braitmayer West Root

Margaret “Maggi” Braitmayer West Root, 95 years old, passed away quietly on June 24, 2017. Maggi was a lifetime resident of the Washington DC area, born in the District and also lived in Bethesda, Chevy Chase and Leisure World. She graduated from Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School and attended Stephens College in Missouri and GW University.  Maggi West and Bob Root were married in April of 1944. Robert was serving in the US Navy while Maggi worked for the Canadian government office in Washington DC.

Mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, cousin, mentor, friend, benefactor, colleague, teacher, acquaintance … no matter what relationship you had with her, she always managed to make you feel like you were special and important.  She loved those she met while serving as a docent at the Custis-Lee Mansion, an aide at the National Cathedral and member of Chevy Chase Presbyterian Church and Unity Christ Church. She loved everything about the theater, particularly Olney Theatre Center, where she participated in every aspect of supporting their programs and facility. Maggi loved to garden and volunteered at Brookside Gardens as a guide, teaching others how to improve their own gardens. Other service organizations such as Welcome to Washington, PEO, Hospice Caring Inc. and humanitarian efforts around the world were vehicles to show her love for all humankind. A love of God’s creations fueled her desire to travel throughout the world. One of the first things Maggi shared with others was her love of all things connected to Great Britain and was thrilled when she learned her ancestors came from Ireland and Wales.

Maggi was preceded in death by her parents, Charles Krug West and Margaret Esther Braitmayer, her stepmother Alethea Bryan, brothers Charles and Bruce West, husband Robert William Root, and son-in-law Charles Muir. She is survived by daughter Nancy Root Muir, son Robert W Root Jr. and his wife Brenda, granddaughters Joy Muir (Edward) Mollaneda and Jennelle Root (Alex) Martell, grandsons Michael Muir and David (Jaclyn) Muir, as well as six great grandchildren.

The family wishes to thank the wonderful staff at Collingswood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for their tender treatment of this beloved woman during the last weeks of her life.

The family also wishes to thank The caregivers of Home Care Solutions of Rockville, MD for their exceptional care.

Services celebrating Maggi’s life will be held at Olney Theatre Center on August 26, 2017 at 11:00 a.m.  In lieu of flowers, donations should be made in Maggi Root’s name to Hospice Caring, Inc. in Gaithersburg, MD.

 DJAMCHID DARVICH-KODJOURI

 Djamchid Darvich-Kodjouri, 80, died Monday, July 17, 2017 at Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring, MD after a brief illness. Born in Tehran, Iran, Djamchid grew up in a time of great turmoil in his home country – a place that remained in his heart throughout his life. He said his first political act was throwing a rock at the Soviet Embassy in Tehran not long after the Anglo-Russian occupation that took over Iran’s oil fields and instilled Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi as the country’s ruler during World War II. Despite the many political upheavals that followed, including the Iranian revolution of 1979, Djamchid always hoped for better days for his homeland. He also loved the United States, his adopted country, for everything from its promise of democracy to its pizza. He first came to this country in the 1950s to attend college in Missouri and eventually received a Ph.D. in political science from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. He met his wife Charlotte in Washington, DC in the 1960s and together they lived in many places, including Iran, Ohio, and Maryland. Djamchid was a professor and an active member of the Iranian exile community. In his later years, he became an avid gardener, and loved communing with the birds and squirrels and other wildlife during long walks with his dog. He also enjoyed spoiling his granddaughter and discussing the world’s problems during frequent lunches with his many close friends. Djamchid was a loving brother, husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend. He was preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte, the love of his life and his constant companion through life’s many adventures. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Allahgholi and Safia; and his sister Farah. He is survived by his brother Jahangir and sister-in-law Ghodsieh, of Iran; brother Jahandar of Iran; son Khashyar of Silver Spring, MD; and daughter Ketayoun, son-in-law Joe Albrecht, and granddaughter Soraya Albrecht, of Silver Spring, MD. Djamchid is also survived by Suzan Pickard and her family in Nebraska, who were close to his heart. He will be missed by many loving family and friends in the United States, Iran and around the world. Visiting hours will be held at Collins Funeral Home, 500 University Boulevard West, Silver Spring, MD on Saturday, July 22, from 12 noon to 1 p.m., where funeral service will follow at 1 p.m. A private burial will be held the following morning. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the SPCA of Anne Arundel County at 1815 Bay Ridge Ave, Annapolis, MD 21403. Please join his family in wishing his soul makes it back to his homeland and will rest, at long last, in peace.

Joan Brennan Wehrstedt (Age 72)

On Saturday, July 15, 2017, of Silver Spring, MD.  Loving mother of Brian (Elena) Wehrstedt, Megan Wehrstedt and Kevin (Sara) Wehrstedt.  Sister of James Brennan.  Also survived by 3 grandchildren, Michael, Thomas and Kira.

A memorial Mass will be held at St. John the Evangelist Church, 10103 Georgia Avenue, Silver Spring, MD, 20902 on Friday, July 21, 2017 at 10:30 am.  Interment Private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Our Lady of the Angels Monastery,  Crozet, VA.
